Luckily, we were blessed with a beautiful day for our
hike. We had a tour of the Irish Shrine, a small building
near the B&O Railroad Museum, which was built in
1848 and occupied by Irish Immigrants and their
descendants until about 25 years ago. Tom Ward, our
museum guide, gave us an explanation about the
building and its history. Joyce also proved to be quite
knowledgeable about local history.
We then headed northward and went by several local
landmarks. We visited Round Falls, which was flowing
nicely. The day became warmer as we headed through
Wyman Park. The group was quite fleet footed and we
arrived in Hampden 40 minutes ahead of schedule.
The extra time allowed us to do some shopping and
browsing in Hampden's stores. I am sure the
shopkeepers were happy to see us.
Holy Frijoles served us delicious Mexican fare. Having
a warm and friendly restaurant along a hike has its
advantages; it certainly beat a cold sandwich on an
even colder mountaintop. We headed out through
Hampden and got to see the wonderful Christmas
decorations provided by Hampden residents. Passing
Stonleigh, Safety City, and across Druid Hill Park, the
group arrived at the BaltimoreConservatory, which has
been beautifully restored. We were able to warm up
and rest a bit while enjoying the flowers and plants. The
walk back to the cars was an easy, steady downhill
on Gilmor Street, which afforded us the opportunity to
pass both Hollins Park and Union Square.
We got some exercise and enjoyed some rare winter
sunshine. Hopefully, a good day was had by all.
