Write Up:
We had a great group of mostly new MOC members show up for this wonderful hike a little ways west of Frederick, MD. This section of the Appalachian Trail is extremely popular with backpackers and day hikers alike, so it was no surprise that the trailhead parking lot was practically overflowing. However, after finally gathering everyone, we set off north along the AT, pausing briefly on the footbridge that crosses over Interstate 70. Fortunately, the trail quickly plunged into the woods, allowing the group some relief from the upper-80's temperatures and sun. Unfortunately, the first part of the trail was mostly uphill, but it was good to get the hard part over right in the beginning.

Once the trail leveled out, we had quite an enjoyable walk in the woods, passing a large group of scouts on the way to Annapolis Rock for an overnight backpack. After a couple of miles hiking, we turned off the trail and descended to the overlook at Annapolis Rock. On the way down, we received a warning from the ranger to beware of the rather large bees (who we were told had an extra painful sting). However, our group was able to enjoy lunch on the rocks in a bee-free zone. We did get treated to some amazing views and watched the rock climbers in the area as they scaled the cliffs.

After lunch, we continued north on the AT for another mile to the Black Rock overlook. We had to practically blaze on own trail to the rocks due to the overgrown plants and trees, but once there the view did not disappoint.

Setting off again, we covered the three miles back to cars rapidly, as the trail was either flat or headed downhill for the most part. Lots of great mingling and discussion among the group occurred. We arrived back at the trailhead in great spirits, though most of us were eager to make it home to our showers!
