What an amazing day for a hike! The weather was just about perfect as the MOC gathered in this corner of Carroll County. The McKeldin area of Patapsco Valley State Park is small, but packed with plenty of things to do. After gathering everyone in our rather large group together, we set off through the woods along the Switchback Trail. As we gently descended into the valley, we were treated to plenty of shade and a deer sighting.
After about a mile or so, we reached the McKeldin Rapids section of the river. We lingered for a bit as the river cascaded through the rocks, finally settling in a big wide pool, complete with sandy beach. After this respite, the group again set off through the woods and tackled the main body of the trail. This mostly followed the river and made for a pleasant walk through the woods, despite the occasional noise from a nearby firing range. Of course, we weren't the only ones who were out enjoying the great weather- we passed several other small groups of hikers and quite a few horseback riders. We saw one lucky horse getting sponged down by his rider in the river.
After a couple of easygoing miles along the trail, we were faced with a short, but steep climb out of the river valley. Winding our way through the middle of the park, we made our way back to the cars (after letting some horses pass in front of us in the parking lot).
Thanks again to everyone for coming out!
