Write Up:
Despite the threat of rain, nine intrepid MOC'ers gathered in the parking lot across from the Old Angler's Inn in Potomac. Even at 7:30 AM, the lot was full of kayakers, fisherman, and a few other hikers. After gathering everyone and doing some brief introductions, we headed off along to C&O Canal towpath to the start of the Billy Goat Trail.

Though the rain held off, the sun wasn't around very much when we started the hike. And while the temperature was rather comfy (not too hot), the humidity was killer! As we made our way along the path, we were treated to some great views of the Potomac River gorge. We quickly discovered why it is called the Billy Goat Trail- before long we were scrambling up and over rocks. We didn't run into too many other hikers until we were approaching the end of the trail, but saw several rock climbers on the Virginia side of the river.

After the final section of rock hopping, we made it back safely to the towpath and took a short detour to check out the Great Falls overlook on Olmstead Island. The falls were spectacular and we saw several large birds (cranes?) hanging out on the rocks (and a few kayakers navigating the rocks down to the river from the Virginia side).

After our short snack break at the falls, we headed back along the towpath. Along the way we ran into some rather unfriendly geese and saw several turtles sunning themselves (yes, the sun finally came out near the end of the event). We all arrived back at the cars a little after 11 AM and everyone went off to continue their day. All in all, a great start to the weekend!
