We would like to extend our thanks to the people who
showed up and to the people who had the courtesy to contact
us when they weren't able to make it. Unfortunately many
people decided not to enjoy this wonderful hike with the
chance of rain showers in the forecast, but it turned out to be
a great spring day with clouds and sun fighting for the control
of the skies, lots of wind, and temperatures in the upper
It was interesting seeing the different phases of the ecology
on the mountain. Near the top of the hike, the wind was
howling and there was SNOW! At the bottom, it was warm and
the wildflowers were in bloom. Wow, what a difference. It was
fun taking off and putting back layers all day long. Because of
the rain earlier in the week, the waterfalls were even more
exciting and impressive.
After the invigorating hike, we had a great meal at Rae's deli
in Sperryville, Virginia, at the 'Famous Rest Stop.” Nothing
beats fresh food made locally. After eating, we went next door
and looked around their general store. Chris is a great son
because he bought a jar of organic apple butter for his mom's
birthday. On the drive back, we survived a van that was about
to lose its bumper.
Stay tuned for the second installment of the Whiteoak Canyon
hike later this summer; once the weather warms up it will be a
great place to check out some of the great local swimming
holes situated along the trail.
