As another year draws to a close, it's time to look back at the MOC's accomplishments and celebrate the holidays with one another. In 2003, we gained over 1,000 members, 4 new officers, and had many, many cool events organized by our dedicated members (see full 2003 archive
Our 2nd Annual Holiday Party was close to 40 people, when just one year prior we only had 10% of that show up to our first Holiday Party. The theme this year was helping those in need. While the MOC picked up the tab for much of the food, we encouraged our members to spend those few dollars we were saving them on a new toy for a family in need or to contribute cash to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
We raised $125 for the CBF and well over $525 (in approximated value) in toys and cash for a family pinpointed by the Salvation Army of Howard County.
The cash raised for the family went to buy them additional toys (to even out the gifts among the kids and mom) and also a $100 gift certificate to Giant food store.
Destiny, a 5-year-old, received: massive pink Care Bear doll, adjustable in-line skates, Play Doh, and a Strawberry Shortcake wrist watch
India, a 7-year-old, received: massive purple Care Bear doll, holiday caroling Barbie doll, Barbie coloring kit, Connect 4, and 2 outfits
Michael, a 14-year-old, received: table-top air hockey, PlayStation starter kit, PlayStation controller, 7 old fashioned games in one, and Uno
The mother received: tin of holiday snacks, 3 candle gifts, a Bath & Body Works gift set, and the $100 Giant food store gift card
(The officers delivered the goods to the family in person on December 17th). A HUGE THANKS for everyone that helped contribute their time, money, (and wrapping paper) for these wonderful causes, your holiday wishes were shared with the family when the goods were delivered. The family wanted me to tell everyone "thanks" for everything you guys did to make their Christmas a little merrier...the mother was thrilled to hear that we fulfilled many of the requests on their wishlist. She said that has rarely happened in the past.
Also, thank you to those of you that baked cookies for the party and showed up early to help decorate Rocky Run, and put flyers on the tables.
As 2004 creeps up on us, I wish each and every one of you a fun, safe, and warm holiday season and a very happy New Year. I'm looking forward to the events that will be planned, the laughter shared, and new friendships made in 2004.
See y'all in the New Year!
