Sat, May 12 2012 - SNP AT-Bluff Trail (View Original Event Details)|
Pleasant temperatures and sunny skies meant a good day for hiking in Shenandoah National Park. Our inteprid group of hikers met at the Vienna Metro and headed west for adventure.
We headed south on the AT first, climbing up North Marshall Mountain for some great views of the surrounding valley. We stopped for lunch at the Gravel Springs Hut, meeting up with a thru-hiker who forunately was not seeking solitude at the shelter and who was very happy to partake in some Pringles.
After lunch, we hopped on the Bluff Trail. The hike can be extended with a side trip to Big Devils Overlook, but much to the chagrin of one hiker, everyone else felt that 14 miles was enough for the day. The last three miles may have felt the longest as we climbed steadily back up to Skyline Drive and to our cars.
A mild traffic jam on Skyline Drive was attributed to the sight of three bear cubs and its mother. After pictures were snapped, we headed to the post-hike standby of Jalisco to devour chips and salsa. Most importantly, we were able to get back to Vienna in time for hockey fans to watch Game 7 of the playoffs.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the day!
