It was a bit chilly, but overall a great day for a hike. Signal Knob, located in the George Washington National Forest, is a 10.6 mile hike. Iíve hiked it a number of times; itís easy to get there, and the hike is a nice one. Typically, MOC couples this hike with a camping trip at the group site, which is easily accessible from the Signal Knob trail. Today, we did it as a day hike.
Two dogs and 13 hikers set off on the hike. The humans did 10.7 miles ó the dogs may have logged several more as they ran back and forth on the trail. We stopped for a short break at the Buzzard Rock overlook, and then headed up to the Signal Knob overlook for lunch. Sandwiches were the theme of the hour, except for Nils who packed a stove and made himself some soup (probably a good idea on such a chilly day).
For those who have hiked Signal Knob before, you know what comes next: A mile long trek down a fire road, followed by a short and steep climb back up to the ridge. This time, I I followed Kim and Judeís advice, and backtracked to the Meneka Peak trail. This trail stays mostly along the ridge, with a few ups and downs, and intersects with the blue trail. It was a nice option to keep in mind for the future (although Marc was interested in still checking out the 0.8 mile climb ó thatís for another trip!)
After the hike, six of us headed to Jalisco for some tasty Mexican food (and margaritas Ė have to replenish the electrolytes!). All in all, it was a great day. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the day, including first-timers Kyra, Alan, Raymond, and James.
Iím hoping to repeat the hike some time in the spring, this time as a camping trip, and then adding Buzzard Rocks as the Sunday hike. It should be a good time.
