The MOC started 2004 the right way--by hiking the Appalachian Trail in 60-degree weather! This time we took on a section of the trail in Pennsylvania,
not far from the Mason Dixon Line--Old Forge Picnic Area to Chimney Rocks.
To return, we took a side trail past the lovely Tumbling Run stream.
The hike up to Chimney Rocks was a pretty significant climb of 1,000 feet in
a little more than two miles. Unfortunately, we started a little late and
initially missed the sign to Chimney Rocks (the leader would like to
apologize for this). After backtracking to Chimney Rocks we enjoyed a long
lunch and took in the view of the Pennsylvania countryside.
Since covering the same section of trail for a third time would have stunk, the
decision was made to begin the loop after lunch. This meant we didn't go as
far north on the Appalachian Trail as originally planned and the hike was cut from 8.4
miles to 6.6. However, we avoided a really muddy section of the hike and had
more time to enjoy the descent along Tumbling Run.
To everyone's surprise, we finished at 1:45 (P.M., in case you're
wondering). All participants then ventured to the little town of
Emmitsburg, Maryland, for an enjoyable early dinner at the historic Main Street
The leader received a lot of positive feedback about the area we hiked
(especially the return on Tumbling Run) and will lead this again in the
