Write Up: Monongahela National Forest was the destination for the first MOC backpacking event of the season. After an early meetup at the West Friendship Park & Ride, we grabbed a quick breakfast in Hancock and took the opportunity to get to know each other a bit better. Gail and Stephanie were new MOC members that were participating in their very first event! Gail was also preparing to backpack the Grand Canyon in a few weeks. Giadira was just excited to have the opportunity to backpack for the first time in 3 years!

We arrived at the trailhead around 11am. It was a gorgeous, sunny day, so we were all anxious to get on the trail. We started off by heading west from the trailhead on the Bear Rocks Trail, and then followed the Raven Ridge Trail. After heading south on the Rocky Ridge Trail, we headed toward camp on the Black Bird Trail. The terrain varied around every corner...from a wooded, shady path to open meadows with few trees dotting the landscape to boulder hopping.

After 8.25 miles, we stopped for the night and set up camp at one of several backpacking sites under a large grove of pine trees. Our campsite was along a beautiful creek, and we all took the opportunity to dip our tired feet in the cool water. After dinner, Mike started a terrific campfire, and spent the evening toasting marshmallows and relaxing.

Overnight, a few raindrops fell and the skies were overcast, but it was not enough to dampen our spirits. At 10:20 am, we continued along the Black Bird Knob trail to hike the 6.5 miles back to the trailhead. At the north end of the Upper Red Creek Trail, we had to don our water shoes to cross the creek that was along a very impressively large beaver dam. We hiked back to the trailhead by way of the Dobbin Grade, Raven Ridge, and Bear Rocks Trails. Before getting in our cars for the trip home, we enjoyed the scenery for a few more minutes while enjoying a snack at the trailhead. On the way home (and after a minor detour by Giadira and Heather through a windmill farm), we stopped for dinner at Puccini's in Cumberland for some pizza. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and Mike & I had a great time sharing the beauty of Dolly Sods with Gail, Giadira, and Stephanie!
