Hats and gloves were definitely not the necessary objects to bring to this autumn hike through the woods! The day was sunny, 70 degrees and pleasant for our hike through Gambrill State Park. We encountered fragrant vines, changing autumn leaves and scenic views of Frederick, MD. Though most of the scenery was cloudy, given the seasonal time period, this did not take away from the feeling of accomplishment we all felt upon reaching the overlooks.
The first third of the hike was filled with fairly steep ascensions on the black trail, one of the park's more difficult trails. There was a point in time where all the park's trails converged, requiring us to pay more attention to the details of the trail markers, but for the most part, we stayed on track, keeping a steady pace. We reached the first overlook and had lunch. After that first overlook, we pretty much kept to the yellow trail, passing several mountain bikers and even some folks enjoying the scenery and having a wine & cheese party.
Toward the end of the hike, we were all feeling a bit tired and much like the hike was longer than the author of the hiking book told us (that particular author promised a 6 mile hike, it was probably more like 8!). Luckily, Brian, an expert on this park, saved the day and brought us to the 2nd overlook and bathrooms in a jiffy. In the end, we headed off to Ruby Tuesday's for dinner (I highly recommend the dessert)!
Overall, I feel this hike was a success. It may have been slightly longer than anticipated, but the good company and beauty of nature made up for it.
