This was a joint trail maintenance project with the Mountain Club of Maryland (MCM) which is responsible for maintaining about 30 miles of the AT. Since it was rainy day with uncertain prospects, we scaled back the original objectives and concentrated on a 100 yard section that crossed a boulder field and was close to the cars. We removed a lot of ankle hazards, broke up rock to gravel size, filled in holes and smoothed the treadway. The rain did not ease up as predicted and it was cool enough to be uncomfortable if you weren't moving, so we decided break for the day when that section was finished. We then went for a day hike to Hawk Rock and inspected the area to see what else needs to be done on future projects. The top of the mountain was totally fogged in by a low hanging cloud so the experience at Hawk Rock had a bit of Twilight Zone feel to it.
