Sat, Sep 26 2009 - Clean Up the Bay - Ft. McHenry Field Day (View Original Event Details)|
|Participants:||Kevin Yue, Pamela Fasolo, Ruwan Alwis, Brent Neenan, Kathryn Short|
What a great day! Today, September 26, 2009, is National Public Lands Day, a nationwide day where volunteers work with the National Park Service to provide preservation and conservation efforts to our shared outdoor heritage.
After enjoying a nice free breakfast (courtesy of the National Park Service) and getting free t-shirts (from the National Aquarium in Baltimore), five MOC members and a coworker of the organizer worked at picking up debris and other detritus in the wetlands of Fort McHenry, ending up with quite a number of bags of trash. If it weren't for the tide coming in really really fast, we would probably have kept working. We had to wade through a rising water level to get to and back from the starting point and a few of us got wet! Luckily, the rains held off and we were able to get a lot done. Everything from styrofoam, plastic wrappers, straws, shopping bags, and tires, were all picked up and the area looked amazing. After we got back to the starting point, we took off our quasi-wet galoshes and cleaned up, a free lunch was provided by the National Park Service! And...one more free thing...we received lunch bags from the Aquarium!
Thanks to everyone for participating and to the NAiB and NPS for organizing this great event and I hope to have even more people the next time around!
