The parking lot at the trailhead turned out to be almost as icy as it had been a week earlier when I scouted this hike, but luckily the trail wasn’t nearly as bad—and it got better as the hike continued. We started out on the Black Locust trail and then went on the blue-blazed Catoctin trail until spending most of the hike on the Yellow Poplar trail. About a mile into the hike there was a big elevation gain—which was enjoyed (or not) by all. It was actually quite a nice sunny day for a hike, and the temperature ended up being rather pleasant. With a lot of ground snow the trail was at times difficult to follow, but we managed to stay on track, and ended up with a nice view of Frederick down below at the overlook near the ranger station.
