Write Up:
Whew, hard to believe that such an easy activity - floating on innertubes down a river - could be such a menace to organize! Coordinating the arrival of 50 people did have its challenges, but proved to be a ton of fun as everyone made new acquaintances floating down the Potomac River running through Harpers Ferry. We began near C&O Canal lock 34 and went about 3.5 miles to the take out point. Only one person of 50 managed to lose their tube during the trip, however a few people were banged up from jumping out of their tubes and floating sans tubes down the river at various times for a bit. A couple of us brought along the needed provisions - in discrete containers.

Jeff Ibbott became an underwater shark for a bit, Angela Grillo nearly got dunked, and many more fun happenings were going on along the way down river.

When tubing was near complete, our bellies were a-grumblin' for lunch. We piled back into two converted school buses and hit the road. We started our trek back to the outfitter when we realized a head-on collision had occurred on the only bridge that would get us back to the outfitter. Nearly a ½ hour was shot while we waited as one lane of the bridge was opened up for alternating two-way traffic. We even had someone run to a nearby gas station to go to the restroom - and when the traffic began to move again we all cheered as she climbed back onto the bus in the nick of time!

When the second of the two buses got back to the outfitter, we didn't find the first bus there. The first bus had Brian Loughery on it, and we had all locked our keys in his car and he had the keypad code for his car in his head! The outfitter would not allow us to page him on the other bus, so we waited. Apparently their bus tried a different way to maneuver around the accident scene, but to no avail. They arrived about a ½ hour after us.

Starving, we all grabbed our keys, changed, and a few headed back to Frederick's carpool location, and about half of the group ended up at Ruby Tuesday's in Charles Town. Two for one drink specials - yeah! (If you couldn't tell we like to drink from reading through some of our previous events already).

I did manage to go down to historic Harpers Ferry for a bit. But, that accident really ruined our group plans. Let's cross our fingers for a more flawless tubing trip next year.
